No Featured Merchants Have This Item New - Check All Merchants Customer Reviews Great geocaching GPSI bought one of these to use for geocaching. It has worked like a champ. I couldn't ask for more. It's pretty simple to load waypoints, downloaded from geocaching.com. Just drag and drop. It's extremely accurate. 9 out of 10 times it will put me practically on top of the geocache. Usually within 5 feet.
I haven't loaded any other maps, so I can't comment on that. But the base map has been good enough for what I need.
I'd say this is a great starter GPS for geocaching.
Magellan 500Works great easy to use. Clear screen with different brightness levels. Took hours if not days trying to upload maps. Works great once you figure out you have to use a conversion program. NOT CLEAR in instructions. I uploaded Oregon, California and Nevada (memory card). I purchased maps , case and GPS as a bundle.
Ask before you buy!The product description (and picture) on Amazon states that this product comes with a 64M SD card:
"What's in the Box:
Explorist 500LE navigator with North American basemap, 64 MB SD memory card, CD-ROM with PC application software, user's guide and warranty information"
My package had no memory cards whatsoever. In researching this issue online, I am unable to locate *any* site that says this item includes a SD card of any kind. If I had kept this item, I would have expected to receive a 64MB SD card be sent to me. I would also like Amazon's advertisement corrected immediately.
As well, this item actually shipped from ANTonline instead of "Computer Brain" as stated on the Amazon site.
Finally, the item is listed on Amazon for $141.48 and ANTonline charged me $147.18 (pretax).
As for the device itself...
I have used Garmin GPSs before and found this one more difficult to navigate. It took me several hours of researching online before I realized the stupid connection cable has to be put in seemingly upside-down for your computer to recognize it (there is NOTHING in the accompanying literature that says to do so). My new souped-up Thinkpad couldn't load the software either (and I'm a former help desk technician for IBM so I know what I'm doing when it comes to software). I returned the whole thing to ANTonline, who refunded my money. I was only out the $10 to ship it back to them. They were OK accepting my return but it was only *after* I provided them with a tracking number three weeks later (after no communication from them that they had even received it) when they released the funds back to me via Amazon. Magellan help was NO help - don't even bother. If you google "magellan gps help desk" you'll find plenty to scare you away. This item and seller don't seem worth the extra $10 shipping just for something to return anyway. For $100 more, you can get an awesome Garmin 60cs - stick with Garmin - they know what they're doing!
Love ThisI bought this for my husband for his birthday. We went through 3 before he found one he likes. This is the one!
inept packaging The unit was packed face down, at the bottom of the shipping box, with virtually all the "polyair" shock absorbing material resting on the back of the plastic casing for the unit. I will be shipping it back to the sender unopened, as I will not risk owning a GPS that was subjected to direct, multiple impacts. I have recorded the bar code, and will copy Magellan on this correspondence.
